Bauchi gov tasks Christians on religious harmony
No fewer than 100,000 Christian and Muslim clerics have been mobilised for fasting and prayer in Kaduna State, as the United Nations begins World Interfaith Harmony Week.
World Interfaith Harmony Week, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2010, is a yearly event observed during the first week of February to promote harmony between all people around the world regardless of their faith, culture, ethnicity, region or continent.
Coordinator of the Christians and Muslims Fasting and Prayer, who oversees Christ Evangelical and Life Ministry, Yohanna Buru, said: “We have invited some Muslim scholars to the church, which is aimed at calling for 100,000 Muslims and Christians scholars across the 36 states to offer special prayer and fasting for peace and stability in the country.”
An Islamic scholar, Gambo Abdullahi, led a delegation of some Muslim leaders to Buru’s church, to strengthen good relationship with Christians.
MEANWHILE, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has charged Christians in the state to strengthen harmony with other religions. Speaking at the inauguration of the new leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, the governor called on them to ensure that they always promote peaceful coexistence.
He said the insecurity challenge in the country could only be tackled by synergy in the fight, as the government could not do it alone. Reiterating the commitment of his administration to promoting religious tolerance, Mohammed warned against religious crisis in the state.
The governor tasked the new leadership of CAN to eschew bitterness and work together for peace among the body of Christ. In his speech, the new CAN chairman, Rev. Abraham Dimeus, assured that his leadership would promote peace, unity and cooperation among Christians in Bauchi because, “it is only through such that the body of Christ can foster unity with others.”
