13-month-old baby needs N3m for heart surgery

A 13- month- old baby, Mazeedah Akinfenwa, has been diagnosed with heart problem and would require about N3 million for corrective surgery.

Mazeedah was born with a deep hole in her heart and has been transferred to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Teaching hospital, Ile-Ife.

A letter signed by acting chairman, Medical Advisory committee, Dr. A. Adeyemo, and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Uvue Onokpoya, said Baby Mazeedah has a ventricular septal defect, which would require an open heart surgery and closure of the hole to enable her live a normal life.

The family said they had been able to raise N750,000 out of N 3.6 million needed for the surgery. A Paediatric Cardiologist at OAU Teaching hospital, Prof. John Akintunde Okeniyi, who confirmed the ailment, told The Guardian that the baby requires open heart surgery at the cardiothoracic surgical unit.
