.Reps summon minister, NIMC boss over national ID cards

Chairman, Senate Committee on National Identity and Population, Abdul Ningi, has assured that the 2024 national census would be held as scheduled.

During screening of 17 of the 19 National Population Commission (NPC) National Commissioner-nominees yesterday in Abuja, he submitted: “Coincidentally, most of the nominees are people coming for a second term. It is a renomination, and we have perused through their credentials,” he said.

Earlier, NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra lauded the upper legislative chamber for the exercise.

In a related development, the House of Representatives has summoned Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, over delay in the release of National Identity Cards from 2012 to date.

Also summoned is the Director-General, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Muhammed Shehu (PDP-Bauchi) at the plenary in Abuja, yesterday.

The House said the mission was to find out the reason behind the delay in issuing the document.

It urged the Committees on Population and Anti-Corruption to report their findings within four weeks for further legislative action.

Shehu said despite availability of resources for rapid production and electoral transparency, Nigerians have continued to encounter obstacles to update their information on the NIMC’s database.

He added that this was due to lack of attention from the government and alleged ineffective service delivery.
