67% scores five credits as NECO releases Nov/Dec SSCE results

Two officials sanctioned in Lagos, Oyo for poor supervision
National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) external candidates’ results with 50,066 of the 74,342 candidates (67.35 per cent) securing five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.

However, in Lagos and Oyo states, NECO blacklisted two supervisors for poor supervision, inability to control the candidates, as well as for aiding and abetting.


The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NECO, Prof Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed this while releasing the results and launching the Automated Annual Posting Calendar at the council’s headquarters.

Wushishi said about 74,950 candidates registered for the exams, out of which 74,342 participated.

He stated: “The number of candidates that registered for the examination is 74,950 with 39,213 (52.31 per cent) male and 35,737 (47.68 per cent) female. Of the 74,342 that sat for the exams, 38,867 (52.28 per cent) are male and 35,475 (47.71 per cent) female.

“Candidates that (eventually) sat for English Language are 73,124 and 55,272 (75.59 per cent) got credit and above, while 67,815 (92.75 per cent) of the 73,119 that sat for Mathematics got credit and above.”

Wushishi, who said the level of recorded malpractice reduced drastically when compared to the 2022 edition, noted that the two supervisors were blacklisted for various infractions.

He added: “The number of candidates booked for various forms of malpractice is 8,518, as against 11,419 in 2022, which shows a decline in the number of misconduct by 25.4 per cent. Examination malpractice for 2023 SSCE External involved two centres, one each in Kaduna and Ogun states.

“Two supervisors, one each in Oyo and Lagos states, were blacklisted for poor supervision, inability to control the candidates, and for aiding and abetting. One centre in Borno was blacklisted for aiding and abetting by sharing WhatsApp messages to candidates.”

The NECO boss called on candidates to access their results by visiting the NECO official website www.neco.gov.ng, using their examination registration number.

He also unveiled an e-posting software to facilitate seamless posting of staff to various parts of the country during its scheduled examinations.
