80 artistes to converge on Lagos biennial 2024

The fourth edition of Lagos Biennial, tagged Lagos Biennial 2024, will open on February 3, 2024, with about 80 international and local artistes jostling to maximise opportunities offered, freely, by the event, which is a not-for-profit contemporary art platform under the Àkéte Art Foundation.

The organisers, who unfolded plans for this year’s programme during a media briefing in Lagos, said the event, an exhibition of contemporary art, design and architecture, with the theme, ‘Refuge’, would run till February 10, 2024, at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan.

According to them, the exhibition, among other things, seeks to address the concept of the nation state and critically reflect on the site of the exhibition, Tafawa Balewa Square, the venue of Nigeria’s Independence celebrations in 1960.

The founder and Co-artistic Director of Lagos Biennial, Folakunle Oshun, said: “In addition to its importance in nation-making in the early post-independence phase, and leisure activities in colonial times, hosting concerts during FESTAC ’77 marked a pivotal moment at this key venue because FESTAC’s enduring legacy lies in its visionary pursuit of a global-scale initiative to honour and amplify African cultures across the continent and its diasporas.”

According to the organisers, the 80 participants expected at the event will be coming from 30 countries and will be responding to the theme through architectural pavilions, art installations, artist talks, film screenings, projections and performances.

This edition would also include veteran Nigerian artists: Demas Nwoko and Bruce Onabrakpeya.
