The LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize is a prestigious event set to take place in Paris during the upcoming spring. The seventh edition of the prize is currently accepting submissions, with the deadline for entries set for October 25, 2023.
Launched in 2016, the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize is dedicated to acknowledging and promoting excellence, artistic merit, and innovation in modern craftsmanship. It shines a spotlight on the work of international artists renowned for their exceptional ability to create objects of superior aesthetic value.
The prize offers substantial rewards to the winners, with the top honoree receiving a grand prize of 50,000 euros, and two special mentions each receiving 10,000 euros to support their work. This initiative pays homage to LOEWE’s own origins, harking back to its beginnings as a craft workshop in 1846, and champions the enduring importance of craftsmanship in today’s culture.
Creative director Jonathan Anderson underscores the timeless relevance of craftsmanship: “Craft is always going to be modern. It is about creating objects that have a formula of their own and speak their own language, creating a dialogue that didn’t exist before. It is about newness as much as it is about tradition.”
A distinguished panel of experts, including artists, essayists, curators, and designers, will evaluate all submitted works. The shortlisted works will be the foundation for an exhibition to be held in Paris, where a jury will select the winning piece. The 2024 jury includes new members such as President of the LOEWE Foundation Sheila Loewe, who is now serving as Chairwoman, architect Minsuk Cho, and the winner of the LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize 2023, Eriko Inazaki.
In a significant move, the LOEWE Foundation aims to put a spotlight on the talent emerging from Africa and is encouraging African artists to participate in this global platform. Africa has been making its presence felt on the global stage of craftsmanship, with notable achievements such as Nifemi Marcus Bello winning the prestigious Hublot Design Prize.
