In a statement released by his family, it was confirmed that Ngema, aged 68, lost his life in a head-on collision while returning from a funeral in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

Ngema, known for his contributions to the musical world, started his career as a theatre backing guitarist and achieved fame for his work, including the iconic musical “Sarafina!” and co-written piece “Woza Albert!”

The family expressed their devastation, and details about his funeral will be shared soon.

Ngema, who foresaw his work outliving him, played a significant role in mentoring and discovering talents in the South African entertainment industry.

In a previous interview with TshisaLIVE, Ngema emphasized the importance of the younger generation learning from industry veterans, stating, “I feel like the thirst to learn is lacking in today’s generation.”

In reaction to the death of the iconic film maker, South African minister of culture, posted a tribute on his behalf, he wrote; “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Mbongeni Ngema, one of South Africa’s great playwrights, directors, lyricists and composers. Dr Ngema’s internationally acclaimed work, from Sarafina to Stimela sase Zola, told distinctly South African stories and experiences”

His passing adds to the Somber note during the festive season, where road accidents have claimed over 700 lives, including other notable figures like ANC MP Alice Mthembu.

Mbongeni Ngema’s legacy, filled with timeless creations and contributions to South African arts, leaves an indelible mark on the nation.
