NICO takes Nigerian indigenous language programme to NYSC camp

In an effort to revitalise indigenous languages among young people, the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) has featured an initiative called the Nigerian Indigenous Language Programme (NILP) at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps.

Now in its third edition, this impactful programme is being conducted across more than 15 locations nationwide, aiming to reach a wide audience of youth.

NICO has emphasised that this initiative is not only about preserving indigenous languages but also about promoting national unity and celebrating the rich cultural diversity that characterizes Nigeria.

Speaking at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation, Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, who was represented by the Chief Cultural Officer, Blessing Fashomo, disclosed that there are carefully lined-up language professors to teach Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba online via Microsoft Word and WhatsApp platforms.

He noted that for deliberate follow-up and feedback, a Google form will be provided at the end of the four-week programme.

The NICO boss commended the National Youth Service Corps for their successful synergy and called for more collaboration in establishing NICO indigenous language clubs in communities.

The youth corps members expressed their immense joy and excitement over the new initiative.

They emphasised how this programme has significantly enhanced their awareness and appreciation of their indigenous languages.

Many participants shared personal stories about the importance of preserving their indigenous language, noting that the initiative has inspired them to engage more actively in conversations and cultural practices that celebrate their diverse identities.
