
In commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the Initiative for Research Innovation and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) has renewed its call for the eradication of the practice, citing its severe health risks and human rights violations.
In a statement signed by the Director of IRIAD-The Electoral Hub, Princess Hamman-Obels, the organisation highlighted that FGM affects millions of women and girls worldwide, causing extreme pain, infections, childbirth complications, and lasting psychological trauma.
SIMILARLY, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Oyo State chapter has sought an end to the practice.
During its celebration of this year’s event, themed, “Stepping up the Pace,” it emphasised the need for collective action to eradicate the harmful practice that affects millions of girls and women worldwide.
State chairperson of the association, Mrs. Omolola Alamu and secretary, Mrs. Eniola Adeaga, in a statement, condemned FGM in all its forms.
They called on government, policymakers, and stakeholders to strengthen laws and policies against the practice.
EQUALLY, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reiterated the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to eradicate the practice.
Speaking in Abuja, yesterday, to mark the global commemoration, its Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to instilling sanity.
He urged citizens, healthcare professionals, and policymakers to intensify efforts towards ending FGM.
