Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff: A UNIPORT’s Pride Committed to Mentorship and Empowerment

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff, the Queen of Twon Brass kingdom and Proprietress, Titare Star Royal Academy

Dame Dr. Josephine Diete-Spiff’s story is one of purpose, passion and perseverance – a narrative that Unique UNIPORT proudly claims as its own. The Queen of Twon Brass kingdom, Bayelsa State embodies the institution’s values of intellectual rigour, spiritual depth and community service. As an evangelist and educationist, Her Majesty has made an indelible mark on her communities, demonstrating the university’s commitment to producing leaders who shape the world around them.

Her academic background is a testament to her intellectual prowess, with a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1992, where she also distinguished herself as President of the Students’ Union. She furthered her education with a law degree from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, and was called to the bar as a Barrister at Law of the Nigerian Law School in 2007.

Her academic achievements also include an MBA from the University of Liverpool, UK and a Doctor of Business Administration from Walden University, USA. Additionally, she holds a PhD, Honorary Causa, from Ashland University, Ohio, USA and a graduate certificate in Early Childhood Education from Walden University, USA.

In addition to her academic credentials, Her Majesty has also earned various certifications, including certificates in Theatre Arts, French, Computer and Ministry. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Administration and has been certified as a banker, finance professional, and fitness trainer. Her professional experience spans over three decades, during which she has held leadership positions in various companies and NGOs.

These include serving as Chairperson and Proprietress of Titare Star Royal Academy, Chairperson and Managing Director of Four Time Product Nigeria Ltd, CEO of Peretogu Integrated Services, and Executive Director and Legal Secretary of BZB Nigeria Ltd. She has also served as an Independent Director of University Press, PLC and founded the HRM Dr. Josephine Alfred Diete-Spiff Foundation for youth and women empowerment.

The President of the Royal Queens of the Niger Delta Initiative, recalled what sparked her interest in studying Theatre Arts at UNIPORT, ” Acting came naturally to me as I was growing up. After completing my secondary education, with no prospect of financial assistance to further my studies, I joined a theatre group and began acting with them. During one of our public performances, I was chosen and cast as a nurse and receptionist in a renowned NTA drama series called “Hotel de Jordan,” which exposed me and allowed me to perform in various plays as an actress. Thus, pursuing Theatre Arts as a graduate degree stemmed from my desire to refine my talent. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at university, learning about what I love and having the opportunity to perform in various plays while studying under the esteemed late Professor Ola Rotimi, an icon in theatrical arts.”

On the memorable moments that resonate with her as a UNIPORT graduate, the dynamic woman of substance shared: ” The most intriguing is my time as Vice President and then President of the Students’ Union government at the University. The campaign leading up to the election was memorable. The intrigues, the heart-wrenching fear, room campaigns, some rejections and acceptance by students, the manifesto night, all shaped who I am today—dogged, courageous, and resilient in managing my affairs. However, one incident stood out during my presidency. It was my one-woman riot to save our campus from cultism. My initiative brought the university to a standstill, as my executive and I, tired of the constant turmoil and disturbances on our campus, led to the arrest of the campus cultists by students. We achieved this after an early morning cry to catch those who had sailed the night before. I woke that morning filled with righteous anger, as our campus had been beset by unknown student cultists the night before. With my public address system on a raised platform, all I said was “let’s catch them, we are more than them. Enough is enough!” and the campus erupted.

“I had to enlist the assistance of the Vice Chancellor, and the war began. The students started pulling them out of their rooms, still tired and drugged after their night out. They were all brought to the security gate post for securing, and then, on the VC’s orders, they were moved to Trans-Amadi police station, and from there to Enugu prisons. They were tried, and while some returned to school, others lost their educational pursuits. The school became quiet, and until I left the university, we were free of cultism and its activities. That was a significant victory for a peaceful campus.”

When asked to compare UNIPORT graduates to those from other universities, Dr. Diete-Spiff’s pride in her alma mater shines through. ” UNIPORT is unique,” she asserted, pointing to the institution’s illustrious alumni, including former President Goodluck Jonathan. Having attended other universities, she believes UNIPORT’s distinction lies in its ability to produce well-rounded individuals who excel in various professions.

The university’s renowned Accounting Department, distinguished faculty and proven track record of producing industry-ready graduates made it the perfect fit for his professional aspirations.

During his time at the Port Harcourt based university, several formative experiences shaped his career trajectory. These experiences, combined with the valuable professional connections he built with his classmates, created a holistic professional formation that went beyond textbook knowledge, ultimately preparing him for leadership roles in his future career.

A critical thinker with a progressive mindset, Dr Ayemere was particularly influenced by two esteemed lecturers who played a significant role in shaping his professional development; Prof. Asecheme, the Head of Department, exemplified the perfect blend of academic rigour and administrative acumen, demonstrating that technical mastery and leadership capabilities are complementary virtues.

Meanwhile, Prof. Uwachukwu’s dynamic teaching approach to Business Law made complex legal frameworks accessible and relevant to business practice, providing him with critical insights into corporate governance that he continues to apply in executive decision-making. The impact of these mentors extended beyond imparting knowledge, as they instilled in him the importance of balancing technical expertise with strong ethical frameworks, a principle that has guided his professional success.

Zeenab Group, under the visionary direction of Dr. Ayemere, is playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s economic advancement. The organisation is driving impact through various initiatives, including food security, employment generation, and export development. The company is also creating quality jobs across its operations, promoting economic stability and growth. Furthermore, Zeenab Group’s efforts in promoting Nigerian products in international markets are enhancing the country’s export capabilities and global competitiveness.

The organisation’s success is underpinned by a strong set of values that guide its operations. His leadership has instilled a culture of excellence, innovation, integrity, sustainability and stakeholder value within the company. Zeenab Group’s commitment to these principles is reflected in its consistent A-range ratings from leading credit rating agencies, such as DataPro and Agusto.

By prioritising transparency, governance and ethical business practices, the organisation has built trust with its stakeholders, including investors, customers and employees. Through its relentless pursuit of quality and innovation, the reputable organization is not only driving its own growth but also contributing to the development of a more robust and sustainable Nigerian economy.

To bridge the academia-industry gap, Dr. Ayemere espouses a multifaceted approach that encompasses curriculum enhancements, experiential learning, industry collaboration, and entrepreneurship development. By integrating emerging fields like fintech and data analytics into university curricula, Nigerian graduates can acquire the skills required to thrive in today’s fast-paced business environment.

Moreover, incorporating case-based learning with local business examples and embedding professional certification preparation can help students develop practical problem-solving skills and industry-recognized certifications. Additionally, mandating substantial internship requirements, developing corporate residency programs, and creating simulation labs mirroring real work environments can provide students with hands-on experience and exposure to real-world challenges. By fostering industry collaboration and entrepreneurship development, he says, ” Nigerian universities can produce graduates who are not just certificate-holders, but solution-providers equipped to drive innovation and growth in their respective fields.”

As he reflects on his journey, he offers a wealth of wisdom to current UNIPORT students, urging them to develop a strong foundation in their chosen discipline while also cultivating essential soft skills that set them apart in the professional world. He emphasizes the importance of thinking entrepreneurially, approaching every opportunity with a value-creation mindset, and building a strong network of peers and mentors.

For Uchechukwu Wigwe, one of Nigeria’s leading corporate legal minds, the journey to excellence began at the University of Port Harcourt — a place that shaped not only his intellect but also his core values. A proud alumnus, Wigwe attributes much of his professional foundation to the university’s dynamic blend of academic rigor and social engagement.

He graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor’s degree in Banking & Finance and began his career at Indo-Nigerian Merchant Bank (now Sterling Bank Plc). It was during his time at UNIPORT, however, that a deep interest in governance, institutional structures, and ethical business practices began to take root — ultimately steering him towards the legal profession.

“My background in Finance has been instrumental in shaping the way I navigate the legal landscape,” Wigwe says. “A solid understanding of financial principles allows me to interpret numbers, assess risks more accurately, and communicate legal strategies in a language that resonates with clients, investors, and stakeholders alike. I don’t just look at issues from a purely legal lens but also consider the commercial and financial implications, which is crucial in delivering practical, value-driven solutions. The knowledge I acquired at the University of Port Harcourt provided a good foundation for my legal profession.”

Motivated by a desire to shape high-level decision-making and influence policy in key economic sectors like banking and finance, Wigwe pursued a second degree in Law at the University of Ibadan and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2005. He co-founded Akanbi & Wigwe in 2008, and later established Wigwe & Partners in 2018 — a firm now known for delivering strategic legal solutions to a wide range of corporate and commercial clients.

As Managing Partner of Wigwe & Partners, Wigwe leads a multidisciplinary team that advises on complex transactions in sectors including energy, infrastructure, project finance, corporate finance, and real estate. He serves both local and international clients, offering counsel to multinational corporations, development institutions, and governments.

His influence extends beyond legal advisory. He sits on the boards of Coronation Capital Ltd, Moneda Capital Ltd, Eko Development Company, and Trium Networks, bringing his legal insight to strategic business decisions. A committed professional, Wigwe is an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the International Bar Association (IBA), and the Association of International Energy Negotiators (AIEN).

For young graduates and undergraduates who hope to chart their own paths to success, Wigwe has sound advice: “ Develop a genuine curiosity and never stop learning — it will set you apart. Cultivate integrity and consistency because your reputation is invaluable. Surround yourself with mentors and peers who challenge you to grow. I also believe strongly in setting clear, realistic goals; aim to set SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Combined with resilience, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, this approach will guide you steadily towards success.”

DR. RICHARD NYONG, OON: RESULT ORIENTED PROFESSIONAL, INNOVATIVE TECHNOCRAT AND A REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT EXPERT, DELIVERING, LUXURY AND AFFORDABLE HOMES IN NIGERIA

Dr. Richard Nyong, Group Managing Director/CEO, Lekki Gardens Group

“Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness” – Napoleon Hill

The above quoted statement vividly describes the impact and innovative leadership style of Dr. Richard Nyong, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Gardens Estates Limited, one of the leading real estate development groups in West Africa.

Coach and mentor, catalyst and agent of positive change, visionary pragmatic and incisive leader, accomplished business administrator, innovative technocrat, seasoned economist, real estate development expert, all words that have been used to describe him at various times, Dr. Nyong is indeed a man of many parts.

When still fresh from the prestigious University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Economics, Dr. Nyong ventured into the real estate space in 2011, no one could have predicted the unprecedented and significant impact the young entrepreneur was going to make to the sector and by extension the Nigerian socio-economic terrain. Young and unknown in corporate Nigeria thirteen years ago, he in less than a decade rewrote the template and narrative of the nation’s multi-billion Naira property industry, to the adulation of many.

Specifically, in 2012, he founded the Lekki Gardens brand and armed with little more than vision and an unshakable belief in the residential real estate sector, he made the audacious decision to tackle Nigeria’s massive housing deficit and the impediments to home ownership. Since then, the nation’s home ownership market has never been the same.

Between those beginnings and today, Lekki Gardens has helped to bridge the housing gap and made home ownership a reality for tens of thousands across Nigeria.

The brand through her unique land acquisition strategy and unmatched flexible payment plans has lived up to her ‘luxury you can afford’ byline, having made many young and upcoming Nigerians own homes in very choice locations across Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Beyond business, Dr. Nyong is deeply committed to giving back and fits Albert Einstein’s saying that “the value of a man should be seen in what he gives and not in what he is able to receive.” He has silently renovated schools and built access roads and other infrastructure in different communities. The foundation also funds academic research and invests in key infrastructural development, helping to create a conducive learning environment and opening doors for the next generation of leaders.

It was no surprise therefore when in recognition of his significant contributions to his alma mater and the larger society, the University of Port Harcourt awarded him an Honorary Doctorate degree in 2022.
