Lutful-lahi International has disbursed its yearly Zakat proceeds, shifting its focus this year to support its most vulnerable members.
The organization provides crucial aid to beneficiaries requiring emergency medical care, support for the elderly and assistance for empowerment initiatives.
In previous years, its Zakat funds had been distributed to prison inmates and patients undergoing treatment in various general hospitals, including Gbagada General Hospital, Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital and Yaba Psychiatric Hospital, among others.
This year’s decision to prioritize its members was made to address urgent and specific needs identified within the Luthfullah community.
At the disbursement ceremony, the founder of the organisation, Sheikh Muhammad Robiu Abdul Malik, underscored the virtues and responsibilities of Zakat.
He clarified that Zakat is not meant for the personal benefit of Imams, clerics or the organization’s leadership. Instead, he emphasized that its sole purpose is to serve the needy, as mandated by Allah in the Holy Qur’an.
“The primary purpose of Zakat is to bridge the gap between the affluent and the less fortunate, ensuring that wealth circulates to care for those in society who require assistance.”
Chairman, Lutfullah Zakat Committee, Alhaji Sultan Egbeyemi, provided details of how this year’s funds were allocated.
He explained that the disbursement was carefully planned to address some of the most critical needs among the group’s members. “The Zakat was distributed to individuals who required urgent and emergency surgeries, providing them with a much-needed financial lifeline to cover their medical expenses.
“Additionally, the elderly members of the community were provided with support to ensure their well-being and dignity. A portion of the funds was also dedicated to empowerment programmes, which will help recipients start small businesses, offering them a sustainable path out of poverty.”
Egbeyemi underscored the fundamental role that Zakat plays in social welfare, stressing that Zakat is to take care of the needy in the society .
“This year’s concentrated effort, while directed at the foundation’s internal community, exemplifies this principle in action. By addressing the specific and pressing needs of its members, the Luthfullah Foundation demonstrated a commitment to fostering a strong, self-sustaining community where every individual’s welfare is considered a collective responsibility.
“The disbursement was not merely a financial transaction but a powerful act of solidarity and communal care, reinforcing the bonds of faith and mutual support,” he said.
