Ten students of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, have been selected into the prestigious Millennium Fellowship Class of 2025 by the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) and the Millennium Campus Network (MCN).
With the fellowship being one of the most competitive student leadership programmes worldwide, with an acceptance rate of less than 7 per cent, it brings together each year exceptional undergraduates from more than 100 countries for a transformative leadership journey that runs from August to December.
While disclosing the feat recorded by the students in a statement, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Isaac Oluyi, stated that the fellows will receive intensive training in leadership, advocacy, and project management, as well as the implementation of social impact projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UNAI principles.
The selected students are Boluwatife Ogunwole, Favour Chukwudebe, Gift Olubusola, Ifedolapo Oriade, Nifemi Obalokun, Olamide Oludoju (Campus Director), Oluwasekemi Osalade, Oluwatobi Muyiwa (Campus Director), Oluwatosin Ebiseni, and Temitope Sowole.
According to Oluyi, nine out of the ten selected fellows are women, underscoring UNIMED’s growing role in championing female leadership, inclusion, and empowerment in higher education.
“This achievement affirms that UNIMED is not only producing change makers but also driving a culture of gender equity where women are taking the lead in shaping solutions for a better world.
“The Millennium Fellowship Class of 2025 marks another chapter in UNIMED’s growing global reputation. It affirms that the university is more than a centre of academic excellence. It’s a launchpad for leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will define the future of healthcare, education, and sustainable development.”
Also, UNIMED’s Student Union President and Millennium Fellow, Class of 2024, John Kalejaiye, who expressed pride in the achievement, said, “This recognition goes beyond individual accomplishments. It shines a global light on UNIMED’s dedication to raising leaders who are globally competitive, socially responsible, and impact-driven.
“The fact that nine out of ten fellows are women is especially inspiring. It reflects the power of female leadership and the bright future of inclusive excellence we are building at UNIMED.”
On her part, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, who expressed delight at the development, praised the students for their accomplishment and charged them to aim for even greater heights.
She said, “I am delighted at this development. This is indeed gladdening. It is exactly the direction we want to go. I want to see our students not just shining nationally but also becoming globally relevant. I congratulate the new fellows and encourage them not to rest on their oars.”
