World Habitat Day: LASG seeks cooperation on flood-resilient measures, sustainability

Association accuses states of neglecting housing projects

Lagos State Government, yesterday, called for greater collaboration on flood-resilient measures to protect lives and property, as well as strengthen the state’s capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, stated this yesterday, during the World Habitat Day 2025 celebration, held at The Blue Roof, Lagos Television (LTV), Agidingbi, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu, while speaking on this year’s theme: “Urban Crisis Response: Flooding in Focus,” reflected the realities of Lagos State as a coastal megacity and underscored the need for decisive and sustained action.

According to him, flooding had become a persistent urban challenge that demanded proactive long-term planning, and others.

The governor said that urban resilience had been a core component of the state’s development framework, with the Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) coordinating policies and projects that mitigate flood risks.

He, therefore, urged private investors, development partners, and innovators to cooperate for a sustainable and resilient Lagos State, especially in the areas of climate adaptation and others.

Meanwhile, the Association of Housing Corporation of Nigeria (AHCN) has accused most of the State Housing Corporations of not executing any tangible housing project this year, saying that many of them are still very dormant without a definite direction on housing provision.

It said that the National Housing Policy recognises state housing corporations as the primary government agencies responsible for housing delivery at the state level and the Federal Housing Authority at the federal level.

President of the association, Eno Obongha, who spoke during the World Habitat Day, yesterday, noted that several opportunities had been created, which, if sustained, could revolutionalise housing and reduce the housing deficits in a much shorter period.
