The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, at the weekend, received more than 100 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, in what observers described as a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
The defection occurred during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) in Obingwa Local Government Area, an event that attracted a large turnout of supporters and party loyalists.
Welcoming the new members, Kalu praised their decision to join the ruling party and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is committed to promoting inclusive growth and development nationwide, with particular focus on the South East.
Leading the defectors, former PDP State Secretary Barr. Ibe Nwadioha said the movement symbolised the decline of opposition parties in the area, describing it as a “hurricane of change” sweeping through Abia politics.
“My entry into the APC has marked the collapse of every other political party in Obingwa Local Government,” Nwadioha declared. “It is a landmark moment, and we will support Mr. President and work with Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu to bring renewed hope to our people.”
The event also featured a traditional honour for Kalu by Obingwa APC stakeholders, led by a former Federal Commissioner representing the South East at the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Dr. Nyerere Chinenye Ayim.
Kalu was adorned with traditional attire and presented with a symbolic machete, signifying courage, strength, and leadership, reflecting his growing political influence across Abia State.
Addressing the crowd, Kalu commended the people of Obingwa for their hospitality and commitment to progress, stating that the Renewed Hope Partners initiative would enhance grassroots engagement and strengthen local participation in national development.
He reaffirmed his loyalty to President Tinubu and restated the administration’s commitment to ensuring that no part of the country, including the South East, is excluded from national growth efforts.
The vibrant ceremony, characterised by music, dance, and cultural displays, signaled a new phase of political realignment in Abia State.
