Players and officials of Edo Queens FC are on cloud nine following their triumph at the 2024 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), which ended yesterday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Newcomers, Edo Queens, drew their last match 1-1 with hosts, Bayelsa Queens to emerge winners. The team thus claimed Nigeria’s slot to play in this year’s continental championships.

Speaking soon after leading Edo Queens to lift the trophy, Coach Moses Aduku declared that the Super Six triumph is their parting gift to the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, whose tenure is about to end.

“We are very grateful to Governor Obaseki for his morale and financial support for us. I am happy we won this Super Six as a parting gift for him and other members of his cabinet for their love and support for us.”

The coach also praised the Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Yusuf Alli, for providing a level playing ground for them to operate.
On his part, Yusuf Alli commended the team for doing the state proud.

Speaking with The Guardian on the phone soon after the victory, yesterday, Alli said; “This victory is a reward for the team’s hardwork and support from the state government. I must salute the players and the coaches for their doggedness. It was not easy.”

“I praise the entire squad for their exceptional performance and not losing focus of their dream. Our Executive Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, his wife, Dr. Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, and the entire people of Edo State are very proud of you.

“Before they left for Bayelsa, I promised them a heavy boost, I want to say that every promise I have made to the team will be fulfilled for winning this prestigious trophy,” Alli said.

The NWFL Super Six is played yearly at the end of the regular season to determine who becomes champions.

Six NWFL teams qualified for this year’s Super Six, three from each group.
While Confluence Queens, Heartland Queens and Nasarawa Amazons qualified from Group A, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens and Rivers Angels picked the ticket from Group B.

With the 1-1 draw with Bayelsa Queens yesterday at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Edo Queens finished on the log with 10 points from five matches.
