Audacity makes a man make his moves which eventually lead to his fulfilment. Many music stars whose musical journeys began in the church before finding their voices in industry took a bet on themselves, and they took those steps. Baddestoyoko, the Nigerian singer and songwriter, made the same audacious decision to step beyond his familiar beginnings in pursuit of his own artistic path.

Raised in Onitsha, Anambra State, Victor Chidi Uzoma now professionally known as Baddestoyoko is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and music director whose current musical art is shaped by his exposure within the walls of the church with performances spanning Latin, Igbo, English and Yoruba with the Black Rosary choir. His wins, and early leadership as a music conductor equipped him with astute work ethics and gave him an enduring connection to the richness of African musical expression.

With the release of “Dance” in 2015, he introduced himself to the world and also the musical space. As his career started to develop, finding his voice, he sought an identity that would set him apart from the growing number of performers using that particular stage name he adopted. That search eventually led to Baddestoyoko, a name that later ushered him into his era of more focus and immense growth in his career. While Baddestoyoko’s voice and style are distinct, he is still being influenced by some Nigerian acts as J. Martins, Flavour, Davido, Burna Boy and Asake whose sounds keep deepening his roots in Afrobeats with the infusion of modern highlife, and contemporary African music.

Baddestoyoko keeps finding his handles of fulfillment in the Afrobeats ecospace in Nigeria and beyond with his growing catalogue. With the release of “Dance” (2015), “Amara” (2021), “Sunmankwe” (2022), “Mary” (2023), “Omo Ologo” (2023), and Pray (2024). These singles further establish his presence in the industry. Heartfelt amongst these tracks is “Pray.” “O Lord, I pray make you open the way” is the first lyric of the song and also the premise. On this mild-soulful Afrobeats track, Baddestoyoko expressed his depth and wish to his audience and to God.

On November 24, 2024, Baddestoyoko performed at 9ice live concert held at The Lighthouse Theatre Camberwell London, UK. This really took a positive turn in his journey as a live performer. The appearance represented one of the early steps towards those big stages and international opportunities in his evolving career. The event started in the evening around 6PM and extended to about 11PM, featuring a lineup of diverse live performances and entertainment. Baddestoyoko’s performance formed part of the night’s musical highlights.

His live performance opened with his 2023-released song, “Mary.” The song which rests on a mid-tempo Makossa-like groove and laced with rhythmic guitars explores sensual pleasures and intimacy between lovers. “I wanna hold your body tight, I wanna handle you” he sings, establishing the song’s flirtatious and intimate mood from the outset. On the stage, Baddestoyoko brought this message to life with engaging delivery, clean vocals, and ‘steezy’ moves. While the audience’s reception was a bit cold for a few minutes, they got heated up with his stage presence and also the sound. These vibes continue to build up which also set the tone for his next song performance.

“Omo Ologo,” his 2023-released Afro-Reggae love letter was also performed, and it had a noticeable lit atmosphere as many in the audience stood up to dance to the song. The record resonated well with them, especially the women in the audience;as they responded with high energy to embrace the song’s romantic message. Aura for aura, Baddestoyoko stepped down from the stage and moved closer to the crowd, turning the performance into a more intimate exchange. Their body language, from broad smiles and singing along to mild wriggling, energetic dances, show how connected they are to the performance. In fact, Baddestoyoko’s smart move, stepping down to the audience added spontaneity and excitement to the performance, even while he also performed “Sunmankwe.”

With warm stage light illuminating the venue, and the lively, engaging atmosphere, Baddestoyoko’s confidence and stage-control prowess added an icing on top of the cake. Apart from the aesthetics of the stage, and that of the venue at large, the reception of the audience also contributes to the beauty of this show. While this may not matter, the large projection behind him added a striking visual element to the performance, but it would have been more beautiful if the official music video of a song like “Omo Ologo” was displayed as he performed. The combination of the stage production, his energetic presence helped transform the performance to a memorable live experience.

Baddestoyoko’s audacity made him find his voice in the industry; even though evolving, it is one of the moves to be made by a serious music artist in a society like Nigeria, where causing a change can come with doubt, and criticism. His journey reflects the courage it takes to pursue an identity that is real to him, and true to his dreams.
