Academic and administrative activities have been disrupted at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State due to a massive protest by students over controversial university policies.
Reports indicate that as early as 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024, the main gate to the university was locked by protesting students against the university authority.
The protesters, mostly from the faculties of Law and Management Science, were angered by policies they described as oppressive, including being transferred to other departments via a newly introduced proceeding list that they claim is not supported by university law, rules, or regulations.
Staff and visitors to the university were stranded as the protesting students blocked the main gate, brandishing placards with various inscriptions depicting their displeasure with the university management.
In response to the unrest, the university administration, led by Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Sunnie Adagbonyin, has called an emergency Senate meeting for 1:00 p.m. today.
A memorandum issued by Acting Registrar Mr Ambrose Odiase said: “I am directed to convene an emergency meeting of Senate today, 6th June 2024, to address matters of urgent importance, including the issue of course registration and the proceeding list for law students.
“The meeting is mandatory for all members.”
