Abia lawmakers impeach speaker Orji

Chinedum Orji

Lawmakers in the Abia State House of Assembly on Tuesday impeached the speaker Chinedum Orji.

18 out of 27 members carried out the impeachment at an undisclosed location.

The impeachment was reportedly moved by Chukwudi Apugo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who represents Umuahia-East.

Also, it was seconded by Okey Igwe of the PDP, who is representing the Umunneochi Constituency.

The lawmakers are accusing Orji of gross misconduct and highhandedness.

Reports said the Clerk of the House was not present to swear in the new speaker.

A source close to the state government described the impeachment as “Legislative Nollywood” which cannot stand, according to a report by Channels TV.

The source said the House of Assembly complex had been under lock and key, so the 18 lawmakers going ahead with the impeachment move outside the assembly complex is illegal.
