Academy bridges skills gap, as industry grapples with shortage of labour

As the roofing industry in Nigeria continue to experience shortage of manpower due to skills gap, Plusworld Roofing Academy has continued to offer comprehensive training programs for aspiring roofers, contractors, and industry professionals.

The Academy with its comprehensive curriculum, state-of-the-art facilities, and mentorship opportunities, has continued to shape the future of roofing in Nigeria and beyond.

The Chief Executive Officer of Plusworld Roofing and Restoration, Dr. John Igbaifua, in a statement made available to The Guardian, noted that the academy is not just a training institution, but a catalyst for transformation and excellence in the roofing profession.

Igbaifua noted that the roofing industry in Nigeria plays a crucial role in the construction sector, providing shelter, protection, and structural integrity to buildings across the country.

He lamented that despite its importance, the industry faces significant challenges related to a shortage of skilled labour and a lack of formal training opportunities.

He said Plusworld Roofing took proactive steps to establish the country’s first roofing academy to tackle some of the issues facing the roofing industry.

“As a result of offering specialized training programs, the academy aims to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to excel in the roofing profession,” he said.

On how Plusworld Roofing would help bridge the skills gap, Igbaifua said the academy would be offering a comprehensive curriculum that covers all aspects of roofing, including installation techniques, safety protocols, material selection, and project management.

“The roofing industry in Nigeria has long faced challenges related to a shortage of skilled labor and a lack of formal training opportunities.

He further stated that students would undergo rigorous training led by industry experts and seasoned professionals, adding that they also gain practical insights and real-world experience that prepare them for success in the field.

“The academy boasts state-of-the-art training facilities equipped with the latest tools, equipment, and technologies used in the roofing industry. From mock roof installations to hands-on workshops, students have access to immersive learning experiences that simulate real-world scenarios and prepare them for the challenges of the job.

“The academy’s curriculum is designed in collaboration with industry experts and tailored to meet the evolving needs of the roofing sector. Students learn about the latest trends, techniques, and best practices in roofing, ensuring that they are well-equipped to tackle the demands of the job market upon graduation.

“In addition to technical training, students at the Plusworld Roofing Academy receive mentorship and guidance from experienced professionals in the field. Mentors provide valuable insights, career advice, and networking opportunities that help students build connections and advance their careers in the roofing industry,” he said.

He, however, insisted that the primary factor contributing to the skills gap in the roofing industry is the limited access to formal training programs.

According to him, unlike other trades such as plumbing or electrical work, few institutions in Nigeria offer specialised training in roofing techniques, materials, and safety protocols. As a result, aspiring roofers often lack the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the field.

He said: “In the absence of formal training programs, many individuals enter the roofing profession through informal apprenticeships or on-the-job training. While these arrangements can provide valuable hands-on experience, they often lack a structured curriculum, mentorship, and oversight. As a result, apprentices may struggle to acquire comprehensive skills and may be unaware of industry best practices.

He added that there is a need for government to implement strategic initiatives such as formal training programs, apprenticeship opportunities, continuing education, and industry collaboration that can help address challenges and build a skilled and resilient workforce for the future.

He stressed, “With a concerted effort to invest in training and development, the roofing industry in Nigeria can thrive and contribute to the country’s economic growth and infrastructure development

“To address the skills gap in the roofing industry, stakeholders must prioritise the establishment of formal training programs that provide comprehensive education and practical experience. This includes collaborating with vocational schools, technical institutes, and industry associations to develop curriculum, provide instructor training, and ensure accreditation of training programs.

“In addition to formal training programs, promoting apprenticeship opportunities can help bridge the skills gap by providing aspiring roofers with hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced professionals. Employers can establish apprenticeship programs within their companies, offering structured training, mentorship, and career development opportunities for entry-level workers.

“To keep pace with technological advancements and industry trends, roofing professionals must prioritize continuing education and professional development. This includes attending workshops, seminars, and trade shows, as well as pursuing certifications and specialized training in areas such as green roofing, solar installation, and safety compliance.

“Addressing the skills gap in the roofing industry requires collaboration among stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, industry associations, and employers. By working together to identify challenges, share resources, and implement solutions, stakeholders can create a more robust and sustainable workforce pipeline for the roofing sector.”
