Adekunle Gold Opens Up About Sickle Cell, Encourages Fans at Concert


Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has publicly revealed his battle with sickle cell anemia and offered words of encouragement to others living with the condition.


Adekunle Gold, known for his soulful music, surprised fans by dedicating his song “5 Star” to individuals battling sickle cell disease.
Before launching into the performance, he addressed the audience, sharing:

“I want to say you can do it. If I can do it, you can do it too. I grew up with sickle cell. I was born with sickle cell. All my life, I fought with it. But I am thankful I was able to manage it.

“I’m everywhere, doing shows, I don’t fall sick. I am thankful. So this is reaching out to everybody going through, having to deal with the crisis, you can do it. It should never stop you. Look at me, I am a superstar right now.”

This moving moment on stage was the first time that Adekunle Gold had opened up about his lifelong battle with sickle cell disease.

As a powerful symbol of solidarity and support, Adekunle Gold dedicated his performance of the song “5 Star” to all sickle cell survivors.


Adekunle Gold, born Adekunle Kosoko, is a Nigerian highlife singer, songwriter, and graphics designer. He rose to prominence with his hit song “Sade” in 2015 after signing with YBNL Studio and releasing his debut album titled “Gold.” Adekunle Gold hails from the Kosoko royal family of Lagos State, Nigeria.

He is married to female Nigerian artist Simi and the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Adejare Kosoko, on May 30, 2020.
