AFCON 2023: Omeruo confident Nigeria can beat any team in Africa

Kasimpasa of Turkey central defender, Kenneth Omeruo said he is confident that the Super Eagles can beat any team they come across in the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Omeruo expressed this confidence in the Super Eagles to go on and conquer any ‘enemy’ ahead of the AFCON 2023 Round of 16 crunch fixture between Nigeria and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

The former Chelsea and CD Leganes center-back said this while speaking to the Super Eagles media officer, Babafemi Raji after the team’s training session in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Wednesday.

“Obviously Cameroon is a familiar face, they are a country that we have played several times before,” said Omeruo who has faced Cameroon six times, winning three, drawing two and losing once.

“We are focused, we are training and by the time the game gets closer, we believe in the coaches (Super Eagles manager, Jose Peseiro & Co) to provide us with the best tactics to win the game.”

Omeruo who is an AFCON winner, having achieved the feat with the Super Eagles in South Africa 2013 under the late Stephen Keshi also told Raji that he and his teammates are very confident.

“We are confident. After the last game, we said to ourselves whoever we get next, we just have to keep to our game plan and take it one hundred percent and we can beat any team,” Omeruo stated.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will aim to defeat Cameroon for the third consecutive time at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) when both sides meet in the round of 16 on Saturday.

They clashed at the quarter-finals of Tunisia 2004. A well-taken freekick by Jay Jay Okocha helped Nigeria dash the Indomitable Lions’ hopes of a third straight AFCON after a 2-1 win in a tense game.

The last time Nigeria faced Cameroon in the knockout round of the AFCON was in 2019 (Round of 16) when an Odion Ighalo brace and a fine Alex Iwobi strike propelled the Super Eagles to a 3-2 victory.
