PAN-YORUBA socio-cultural and political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, lauded the National Assembly for contemplating to cut cost of governance and restructure the political system in Nigeria.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi,  the group was quick to add that while the proposed change in government structure from presidential to parliamentary system “is okay, what the country needs now is not just a shift from one system of government to another. There is the fundamental need to have the country returned to the type of arrangement we had before the military incursion in 1966.”

Recall that a bill seeking to effect a change in the system of governance from the current presidential to parliamentary system passed first reading on the floor of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 14, 2024.

Titled “The Bill Proposing Constitutional Alterations for a Transition to the Parliamentary System of Government.” The piece of legislation was sponsored by 60 members of the House, led by Wale Raji (APC: Lagos).

Afenifere said as things stand, Nigeria’s socio-political problem “goes beyond the system of government being run. It weighs more heavily on the structure. This is why we are insisting that the country must be restructured. Any tinkering with the Constitution that fails to address the present structure would be cosmetic.”

ALSO, business mogul, Aminu Dantata, has backed the move for change of governance system. He gave his endorsement yesterday when he received members of the House of Representatives spearheading the bill at his Kano residence.

The former parliamentarian in the 60’s expressed optimism that many more lawmakers would support the advocacy to liberate the country. He reiterated that the country needed a different system of government that encourages economic stability.

Earlier, leader of delegation and House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, said the intent to transit to parliamentary system was to proffer lasting solutions to the nation’s numerous woes.
