African Games 2023: Nigeria moves to second after gold rush in wrestling, weightlifting

Team Nigeria has moved to second position in the medals table at the African Games 2023 in Accra, Ghana.

Nigeria’s leap is not unconnected to its gold medal rush in wrestling and weightlifting.

Currently, Team Nigeria has 16 gold, 10 silver and 15 bronze medals.

Team Egypt tops the medals table with 48 gold, 19 silver, and 18 bronze medals.

Nigeria’s gold rush kicked off on Sunday thanks to Nigeria’s women’s wrestlers who cleared all the gold medals on offer.

On Monday, Edidiong Umofia won three gold medals in men’s Weightlifting 67kg.

Also on Monday, Adijat Olarinoye emulated Umofia’s feat as she also landed three gold medals in the women’s Weightlifting 55kg category, dominating her weight class.

Folashade Lawal equaled Umofia and Olarinoye’s feat as she clinched three gold medals in the women’s Weightlifting 59kg.
