Afrobeat, Reggae unite As Seun Kuti, Damian Marley team up in Dey

The internet was greeted with excitement following Afrobeat star, Seun Kuti’s announcement of collaboration with reggae star and son of the genre proponent, Damian Marley, on the single, titled, Dey.

While the late music legends, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Bob Marley never got to collaborate, their sons Seun Kuti and Damian Marley are set to give fans the highly anticipated collaboration. The development comes on the heels of Seun’s collaboration with Lenny Kravitz.

According to Seun Kuti, the landmark single will be released on Wednesday, June 26. He disclosed this via his Instagram account during the week. The upcoming single marks the first time artistes from the great music families will be having a collaborative project.

In 2013, there was an attempt for collaboration when Julian and Ky-Mani Marley, both sons of Bob Marley paired their father’s Exodus alongside Fela’s M.O.P. Earlier in the year, One Love, the movie about Bob Marley, was released and the soundtrack featured Nigerian stars Wizkid and Bloody Civilian.

At the movie premiere, Bob Marley’s grand-daughter, Zuri Marley was asked by journalists, which Nigerian artistes she would have wanted her grand-father to work with and she mentioned Fela Kuti and Burna Boy.

Seun Kuti has collaborated with several global stars including Janelle Monae in her Grammy Album of the Year nominated, The Age of Pleasure. His upcoming album can be expected to feature reputable artists from different parts of the world.
