Akpabio apologises to governors over N30billion comment

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has apologised to governors of the 36 states of the federation, over his statement that they recently got N30 billion from the Federal Government to soften the effects of hardship.

The former Akwa Ibom governor said his statement was misinterpreted.

During plenary last Tuesday, Akpabio had said state governors received N30 billion each from the Federal Government.

The Senate President said this during deliberation on the alleged N30 trillion Ways and Means advances from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Reacting to the claim, Oyo State governor Seyi Makinde and the Akwa Ibom State governor Umo Eno denied receiving such an amount.

Akpabio in a statement by his spokesman, Eseme Eyiboh said he is not oblivious to the fact that State governments are functional partners in all the efforts of the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He described the governors as valuable stakeholders in the various legislative engagements of the legislature in creating the nexus between the legislature and the people.

He, therefore, urged the governors not to be distracted by any misunderstanding of the context and true meaning of the statement.

He added that he appreciates the current efforts of the governors at ameliorating the adverse effects of the current inclement socio-economic environment and urged them to complement the renewed hope agenda.
