Anambra APC faction vows to appeal ruling on sacking of congresses

Factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Chief Basil Ejidike, has vowed to appeal the judgment of an Anambra High Court sitting in Awka, which voided the January congresses in which he purportedly emerged winner.

Ejidike, who spoke in Awka, yesterday, said he would not allow the crisis in the party to distract him, even as he expressed confidence that the judiciary would serve justice.

He said the plaintiffs, who were elected in 2018 were sacked by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) alongside the Adams Oshiomhole-led executive in 2020.

He said: “After the sack, I was appointed caretaker chairman and in turn appointed the sacked chairmen to head the councils in a caretaker capacity. Those who went to court had no locus in the first place because the NEC sacked them in 2020, we will appeal the judgment and the Supreme Court has the final say.

“Everybody knows that the Anambra APC is peaceful, some people who are not happy with the progress in the party are working hard to destabilise us through the court, but that will not work.”

Ejidike stated that the party had witnessed progress in the state, contrary to insinuations in some quarters that it was not a serious party before he assumed office.

“APC had no elected political office holder, but under my leadership, the party had a serving Senator, a Deputy Governor, five House of Representatives members and seven House of Assembly members in Anambra. It was a closed and static party with not even a councillor in the 326 wards of the state.

“Those who claim to own the party and are behind this distraction have not been able to help the party win any position from councillor to the National Assembly, so they are not happy with the progress,” he added.

It would be recalled that Justice Ike Ogu of the Anambra High Court Awka, in a judgement on Wednesday, ruled that the party’s wards, councils and state congresses held about two weeks ago contravened the initial Interlocutory Injunction earlier issued by his court.

Some party chairmen in the state had approached the court to pray that the congresses should be voided on the grounds that their tenure from the 2018 congress was still subsisting.

Justice Ike Ogu further declared that the party’s congresses held in 2018, which produced the Chief Emeka Ibe-led state executive committee was the only such legally recognised exercise and that the tenure of the Ibe-led executive still subsisted.
