The Anambra government would on Saturday begin free registration and issuance of identity cards to motorcyclists as well as operators of commercial vehicles.

This is contained in a statement issued in Awka on Wednesday by Mrs Uju Nwogu, the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism.

She also said that owners of boats and canoes operating in the state would also be included in the exercise.

Nwogu further said that the government would commence free distribution of branded vests to motorcyclists and life jackets to commuters in the riverside communities of the state.

The exercise, she said, would hold at the headquarters of the 21 local government areas of the state.

She reminded members of the public, particularly commercial and private motorcyclists, that the directive on compulsory use of crash helmet was still in force.

According to her, the use of life jackets and vests was also compulsory for all commuters using canoes and boats as a means of transport.

Nwogu, however, advised mothers travelling with their children to refrain from using motorcycles, urging them to patronise tricycles, taxis and buses to ensure their safety.

She said violators of the directives would have themselves to blame as law enforcement agencies had been directed to ensure strict compliance.
