Anglican bishops set up probe panel over collapse of school’s centenary building

Collapsed Centenary building

The Diocese of the Niger, Anglican Communion, has set up a high-powered panel to look into the unfortunate collapse of its five-storey Centenary Building, at the premises of the popular Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha.

This was announced at the school premises yesterday, by the Bishop on the Niger, Rt Rev Owens Nwokolo, when he visited the site, alongside other Anglican bishops in Anambra State, led by Archbishop Alexander Ibezim.

Thanking people for their support, prayers and expression of love, Nwokolo announced that members of the panel were successful seasoned experts in building projects around the country.

The panel is to be chaired by a judge of the Court of Appeal, Justice Pete Obiora. Others members are: Andy Obianwu, Architect Shed Onwuasoanya, Dr Azuka Onweluzor and Ofodile Anaeto, Peter Okpala, Samuel Akabogu, Chukwunonso Igboka and Kingsley Ibekwe.

Nwokolo, who said the members have versatile experience in the building sector, charged them to bring their years of experience to bear on the assignment.

The cleric, who was visibly touched by the tragedy, said he took consolation in the fact that given the enormity of the destruction, the casualty was minimal.

The Centenary Building, which was sponsored by the Old Boys Association of the DMGS as their signature project for the celebration of the school’s 100 years, next year, collapsed at about 1:00 a.m., on June 12, 2024. No reason has been given for the collapse.
