The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the sole winner of the recently concluded local government election in Yobe State.

Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC), while announcing the result of the election, said APC won all 17 chairmanship seats and 178 councillor positions.

According to the Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Mamman Mohammed, other political parties took part in the polls but none of them won at any of the available levels.

Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, will swear in the newly elected local government chairmen and councillors at a later date while the winners will receive their certificates of return from the state electoral umpire.

Buni addressed newsmen while voting in his hometown and said his plan when he emerged as governor in 2019 was to give local government areas autonomy.

The governor added that he is not against the federal government’s plan to grant autonomy to LGAs.

“I am not opposed to local government autonomy. When I came on board in 2019, my concept was to give autonomy to the local government,” he told journalists.

“Unfortunately, about six out of the 17 local government areas cannot even pay their salaries, so the wisdom behind this joint account complements the efforts of the local governments with the state.”

The local government election in Yobe was said to have been conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, unlike in the past when voters exercised their civic rights under threats from the Boko Haram insurgency.
