APM Terminals commits to investment in capacity development

APM Terminals Apapa has disclosed an investment of 9,696 man-hours in employee learning and development for the year 2023 to ensure employees can compete globally with relevant skills.

This effort spanned over 20 distinct training sessions across various operational functions, with some training occurring simultaneously.

The training programmes cover a range of skills from leadership development and soft skills enhancement to technical skills acquisition, industry knowledge, regulatory compliance, and safety.

Senior People Business Partner at the terminal, Omolara Olatunbosun, emphasised the organisation’s dedication to yearly crafting a training calendar focused on enhancing the professional growth of its workforce.

She said on average, each employee benefits from 24.1 man-hours of training per year.

Olatunbosun emphasised that the employees are central to the terminal’s values, noting that investing in their learning and development to boost their skills, efficiency, productivity, and overall well-being is crucial.

According to her, the terminal offers its employees a wide array of learning opportunities, including internal and external training programmes, both formal and informal, as well as access to a comprehensive global e-learning resource within the Maersk group.

The Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen shared the challenge of keeping employees updated with the latest skills and developments in their fields.

He noted that managing a yearly training calendar requires temporarily withdrawing employees from their daily tasks for training.

Knudsen stated that the significant investment in employee development aims to ensure the terminal continues to provide value to its customers and the local community.

He also mentioned that the terminal extends learning and development opportunities to contractors and external stakeholders, including staff from the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) to enhance their understanding of container terminal operations.
