Lawmaker stresses importance of human capital development

Akonundu
Senator representing Abia Central, Austin Akonundu, has urged governments to prioritise human capital development to enhance societal advancement.

He said that for elected and appointed public officeholders to make positive impacts, they should not ignore human capital development, insisting that it was critical to the welfare and well-being of the people.

Akonundu stated this during his one-year tenure as senator over the weekend, highlighting some of his achievements during the period.

Part of this, he said, was setting in motion the processes of enacting the enabling laws for the establishment of an Institute of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Federal College of Health Technology, and National Sports University within his constituency at the National Assembly.

According to him, “These align with my vision of training many interested youths of Abia Central and beyond into specialists and equipping them to compete favourably with their peers nationally and internationally.”

He said that presently, 113 youths are being trained at the National Teachers Institute (NTI), with him being responsible for their tuition fees and allowances, adding that other youths are also currently being taught in digital marketing, among others.

He also said that he was unmindful of where the beneficiaries come from, pointing out that the most important thing was to equip his people in all areas of entrepreneurship, adding that the skill acquisition drive will help propel the economy of Abia Central in no distant time.
