For the first time since the school was established in 1980, students, staff, parents and old students of Ogharefe Secondary School (OSS) in Oghara, headquarters of Ethiope-West LGA of Delta State celebrated late into the night on Wednesday, last week, following a successful cultural day.
OSS is one of the schools established during the administration of the late Professor Ambrose Ali as Governor of the then Bendel State.
Though OSS staged its first Inter House Sports competition far back 1987, the celebration of Cultural Day Festival has never been part of the school’s activities.
The maiden cultural day festival drew people from far and near, and it witnessed varieties of sporting activities ranging from traditional dance, drama and a novelty football match.
Speaking at the occasion, the school’s principal, Mrs. Rosemary Obozua Enayakpogbe, stated that the festival gave the students opportunity to showcase the rich cultural heritage of ethnic groups in the country.
According to her, OSS now has numerous challenges, top of which is lack of security. “The school needs perimeter fencing because the compound is not fully fenced, which gives opportunity for people to come in at odd hours, destroy school properties and make away with some. The students’ seats are inadequate as a result of frequent carrying and breakage of seats after school hours.
There are no doors and windows in the classroom, and this is a big challenge as intruders always bring them out for activities after school hours thereby destroying them.”
