A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Deborah Aderogba, has donated 25 artworks and 500 healing cards to the institution’s Health Centre, aimed at promoting good health and well-being through artistic expression.

Aderogba said the initiative, titled “Art as a Healing Therapy,” aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 and focuses on good health and well-being in fostering recovery, improving mental health, and enhancing the overall well-being of patients.

“This project is designed to use artistic expressions to improve individuals’ well-being, assist in patient recovery, and boost mental health.“

She noted that the effectiveness of art therapy could reduce anxiety, depression, and stress by 73%.

“Art provides mental relief, helps individuals express their emotions, and fosters creativity; it’s also a healthier, safer alternative to stress relief methods such as drinking.”

She emphasised that the therapy is particularly beneficial for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dementia, as well as adults facing cognitive challenges, in promoting better memory, concentration, and overall mental clarity.

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Simeon Bamire, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Prof. Yomi Daramola, commended Aderogba for her selfless contribution and innovative approach to healing.

He encouraged other students to follow her example and take similar initiatives to enhance the university community.

A healthcare expert, Dr. Olusegun Olasanmi, said art therapy has made a noticeable difference in patient care and helped patients feel more at ease during their consultations, making them livelier and more relaxed in their overall well-being.
