Mutfwang urges Nigerians to remember fallen heroes’ contributions to unity, peace
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has urged Nigerians to remember the fallen heroes for their immense contributions to the unity and progress of the nation.
Mutfwang said that the fallen heroes paid the supreme sacrifice as they laid their lives so that Nigerians would survive. He said that Nigerians would survive.
He said Armed Forces Remembrance Day is celebrated yearly to honour the soldiers of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, marked with military parades.
The government said his administration will support the armed forces to enable officers to effectively fulfil their constitutional responsibilities during prevailing security and financial challenges.
He was speaking with journalists yesterday immediately after the parade, expressing the importance of honouring both serving officers and the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in service to Nigeria.
Mutfwang said the recent renaming of the day to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day” marked a shift towards celebrating serving personnel while remembering fallen heroes.
“This change underscores our recognition of their dedication, bravery and selflessness.
“Our gallant men and women who are in the move of securing the nation, the armed forces have become a very important institution in modern time because we need security, we need them to play the patriotic roles they are assigned to play. I want to salute them for securing the nation both internally and externally.
“We must continue to remember those who had served and retired, some have died. As a nation, we pay respect to those who are aged, those who have served this nation meritoriously. We must have a way of looking after them in their old age and therefore, this day is a platform and an opportunity to remember those of them who had died and left families behind as well as those who have retired and are battling with challenges of life.
“As a government, we will continue to look for ways and means to make sure that their conditions of living are better. One of the things we did this year was to approve free transportation for the aged of 70 years and above and we are looking at other ways to make sure that their needs are met.”
The outgoing General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured Division and Commander, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major–General Abdulsalam Abubakar, commended the steadfast efforts of serving and retired officers in defending democracy and national unity.
General Abubakar urged the armed forces to remain resolute in addressing security challenges and maintaining peace.
