Tems and Ayra Starr have made a groundbreaking achievement for Nigerian music by becoming the only two female artists with the biggest first-day album debuts on Spotify.

Topping the list is Ayra Starr with her third album, The Year I Turned 21. The album accumulated over 6.3 million impressive streams on its first day. Released on May 31, 2024, the album has fourteen songs including Ayra Starr’s hit single, Commas.

The album was released under Mavin Records, a record label founded by Don Jazzy in 2012, and which is home to artists such as Rema, Crayon, Ladipoe, Johnny Drille, and Magixxe.

The album also features high-profile collaborations with artists such as Asake, Giveon, Anitta, and Coco Jones. The massive success of the album is due to Ayra Starr’s rising stardom.

Tems’ “Born In the Wild” hits 5.33 million streams

Not far behind is Tems with her debut studio album, Born In The Wild. The album amassed 5.33 million streams on its first day. Released on June 6, 2024, the album is a collection of eighteen songs including guest features from J.Cole and Asake.

The album was released under Radio Corporation of America (RCA) Records, which has a diverse roster of artists including A$AP Rocky, Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, and Chris Brown.

Furthermore, Tems’ debut album has pre-released singles like Love Me JeJe and Me & U. Love Me JeJe is a reimagined version of Seyi Somodu’s version that was released in 1997. Tems premiered the song during her Coachella set back in April 2024 with a guest appearance from Justin Beiber.

These incredible achievements by Tems and Ayra Starr not only show the growing popularity of the Afrobeats genre, but also the significant role female artists play in the music scene.
