Background checks should be part of recruitment process, say experts

To instil background checks as a culture in recruiting processes, a firm, Background Check International (BCI), has urged corporate organisations to conduct due diligence before employing workers.

At a webinar titled: ‘The impact of background check on businesses, now and in the future’, the Chief Executive Officer, BCI, Kola Olugbodi, said organisations are not conscious enough about background checks before hiring employees.

He said it was important for organisations to make background checks a corporate culture, noting that it has become expedient for organisations to embrace background checks as a corporate policy issue.

Editor-in-Chief, Working Moms Africa Magazine, Mary Ikoku, said data had been a major challenge in conducting due diligence, as it impedes the process.

According to her: “When there is data on criminal records on people, the process of background check is facilitated properly.  It is also important for organisations to focus on the claims and educational verification of prospective employees.”

Divisional Director, Leadway Assurance Company Limited, Kunbi Adeoti, said due diligence impacts positively on the organisation and it should form a crucial part of the employment process to identify bad behaviour and fraudulent acts.

Head, Human Resources, Globacom, Yemi Faseun, maintained that there should be tracking of employees before they engage in fraudulent acts.

He urged organisations to develop a corporate culture that has due diligence and verification as important elements.
