NHRC decries rights violations in democratic Nigeria
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has declared the late Moshood Abiola as the most acceptable democrat in Nigeria for his selflessness and liberalism.
Mohammed said this at the weekend while officially flagging off the state’s economic empowerment programme through which starter packs and vehicles were distributed in Zaki and Gamawa local councils.
The governor said he decided to distribute the empowerment items to honour Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections.
He said: “Today is Democracy Day and we have decided to do it on this day because the person we are celebrating, Chief Moshood Abiola, submitted or provided us with a lot of empowerment programmes in this country.”
The governor urged the beneficiaries to be patient, as the 20 local councils would be covered. He said the items, which include motorcycles, sewing machines, cars and others, were targeted at youths and women.
Assuring Bauchi residents that their security is of utmost importance to him, Mohammed said his government donated 10 vehicles to security agencies to curb the influx of criminals from neighbouring states. He urged the state’s workers to be more patient, as he rids the payroll of illegal workers.
MEANWHILE, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decried the human rights violation in the country, which is practising democracy.
Executive Secretary of NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, stated this in Abuja at the weekend while Nigeria was marking its 2021 Democracy Day.
Ojukwu said: “Despite the progress made in democracy, the country continues to suffer human rights violations resulting from security challenges, unemployment, degrading treatment, discrimination, injustice and gross inequality.”
He stressed the need for more respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms to curtail the current challenges in the country.
