Boi George speaks on vision, plans to take music career to next level

Afro-fusion & Alternative Music Singer, Boi George is set to take his unique brand of music to the next level in 2023. Having released two hot projects to his credit, Boi George is set to explore the very core of his musical repertoire in finding a grandstanding on the Nigerian music scene. In this interview, he talks his music and more.

What’s your favourite part of being an Artiste? Performance or Creating Music?
My first thought would be performance. As an artiste, you may have 20mins tops to be on stage, but In reality, I know I’ve got only 3mins to prove myself to the crowd. But then again, being able to create music and get the opportunity to perform it to a large audience is definitely a full circle completion. So, there’s an order; performance, create more music, performance again.

Why Music? Tell us more about yourself?
Most times you venture into something before you realize the effect of what your decision is. So, if I should answer that question, I would say I started making music before I figured out that it had turned into my profession. I come from a family that has had some musical influence or the other on me. My mother introduced me to artists such as Boney M, ABBA, Marvin Gaye, etc and still listens to new school music; while my siblings are into every genre of music (old and new) and I picked up a lot from them.

You have released two body of works – ‘George Of The Jungle’ and ‘Too Fast For Love’. Tell us about the stories behind them.

I release music or body of work like it’s a collection, kind of like a fashion collection. Imagine brands like Vetements, Tokyo Jamess, Alexander Mcqueen dropping their winter collection, summer collection etc. That’s how I like to see my projects being released. G eorge of the jungle was released in December 2020. The project, from its title, was me being metaphorical and colorful with the word. The hierarchy, scramble for relevance in the music industry, and I, Boi George creating a niche, a space and a cult that will keep spreading the Boi George gospel was all I meant with the George of the Jungle title. Too Fast for Love was released in the autumn of 2022. The album was just me telling the world how I’ve been in a relationship with myself for the longest time. I’m a rockstar who gets love and attention from women but not necessarily romantically involved with anyone as I’m being focused on my goals/career.

You’re very versatile in your range and writing. How will you describe the type of music you make?

Thank you for that compliment, because it sounds super sexy when you put it like that. Well, if Allen Iverson had to practice every other day before the main games, to perfect his shots and all that, then I sure do know luck only happens to the luckiest, because this comes from hard work and consistency. I’ve been doing this all my life and when it’s go time, I don’t even have doubts that I’m doing it right. About my sound, I’m still searching for that name tag, but for now, Boi George is an afrofusion and alternative music artiste.

You will be performing at The Alte Culture Fest, what should we expect?
I wish I was the mutant Pyro from the X men comics, so I could materialize those fire emojis right now. Awesomeness is the word, and Boi George will be seen like never before.

What’s your plans for 2023? An Album?
Definitely a single first before a project, but I won’t say much on that yet because I want a lot of you to expect a lot of me.

When you’re not doing Music, what do you do? What are your hobbies?

Aesthetically speaking, that will be fashion. Creating, working on new designs etc because Boi George is also a fashion designer.

What’s your top 5 cities in the world?

I would love to be asked this particular question few months from now so I could speak from real life experience, yeah but for now, Lagos (which is a no brainer), Copenhagen, Milan, Lyon, London because these are real happening places when it comes to fashion.

What’s your philosophy in life?

Never live with regrets.
