Books address port laws, shipping regulations

The Chairman of Oil Trading Logistics Africa Downstream Energy Week, Dr Emeka Akabogu, has unveiled two books that would address issues of shipping regulations, arrests and detention as well as laws governing port operations in the country.

The books titled: ‘Ship Arrest in Nigeria’ and ‘Nigerian Ports Law’ contain maritime law and were presented during the commemoration of Akabogu’s 50th birthday in Lagos.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, described the books as vital resources to the maritime stakeholders and potential investors.

He said with the book on ship arrests, maritime lawyers, judges, ship owners, investors and other stakeholders, there is a document that shows the do’s and don’ts in shipping with regards to ship arrests and detentions.

“When it comes to ports operations in Nigeria, there are lots of laws and regulations that are fragmented and scattered. Akabogu has taken out time to compile these laws in one book and explain them clearly.

“This is a unique initiative and the book would be an asset to maritime industry players. It will also help simplify our work as regulators as we seek to enforce the myriad of laws within the industry,” Jamoh stressed.

On his part, the President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS), Aminu Umar, thanked Akabogu for creating numerous opportunities for rich discourse on pertinent issues in the maritime and energy sectors.

He said the industry has benefited so much from the platforms created by Akabogu for matters relating to shipping.
