The Borno State government has endorsed an action plan that will eliminate the challenges of climate change in the agricultural and livestock sectors.
The Climate Action Plan (CAP), which aligns with the national and international priorities in climate change governance, was adopted at a stakeholders’ workshop in Maiduguri.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, represented by Ladi Maina, the Director of Administration, said: “The validation of the climate action plan was to address the pressing challenges and devastating impacts of climate change in the agricultural and livestock sectors of the economy.”

She noted that the successful implementation of the plan is, however, not a solitary task, but requires collaborative efforts of stakeholders, development partners and communities in the state.

The action plan, Maina said, provides shared responsibilities of protecting the fragile environment with biodiversity to boost the agricultural and livestock sectors, stating the successful implementation of CAP could also curb unemployment, poverty and food insecurity.

While reviewing the action plan, Prof Abubakar Usman, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) noted that the priority sectors comprise agriculture, forestry, energy, commerce and industry.

According to him, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and research centres are to implement the climate action plan in the local councils. “We will promote smart agriculture with the sinking of 810 boreholes and establish 10 hectares of woodlots in each council,” said Usman.
