President inaugurates commissioners for FCSC, NPC
Nigeria may have moved a notch higher in the area of technology, as President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, received a locally made cell phone, ITF Mobile.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, presented the handset to the President shortly before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.
He said the phone was one of the 12 produced, using locally sourced components by the Electrical/Electronics Technology Department of the Industrial Training Fund’s (ITF) Model Skills Training Centre.
“Twelve indigenous mobile cell phones produced by the Model Skills Training Centre of the Industrial Training Fund, an agency under the Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment, were launched.
“It gives me a great pleasure, Mr. President, to present you with one of the phones,” Adebayo stated.
In April 2017, the most populous black nation joined the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) with the debut of a made-in-Nigeria phone, thus throwing the country into the growing league of manufacturers of communications gadgets.
ALSO, the President swore in commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).
Those inaugurated were Wakil Bukar (Bauchi) and Mohammed Dattijo Usman (Niger) as commissioners for the FCSC and NPC.
MEANWHILE, the First Lady, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, has canvassed robust gender inclusion in the economies of African nations to fast-rack their development.
Opening a three-day African Regional Council of Women Conference, organised by the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) and the Development Research and Projects Centre in Abuja yesterday, the President’s wife, represented by Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, challenged state governments to pool resources for women’s empowerment as a strategic and deliberate economic policy geared at redirecting, reengineering and reinvigorating the economic status of the gender to tackle poverty, unemployment and insecurity in Nigeria.
She said the Federal Government was committed to women’s economic development manifest in various interventions initiated by the current administration since taking office on May 29,2015.
In her welcome address, NCWS President, Dr. Laraba Shoda, described women’s empowerment as the most workable intervention any government could embrace for economic sustainability, family cohesion and peace.
“This conference is brought together to give opportunities to women across the 774 local governments not only to showcase their economic viability, but also to network and form sustainable business relations for the betterment of womenfolk,” she added.
Also speaking, National Administrator, Partnership for Advancing Women Economic Development (PAWED), Mrs. Unekwu Ezekiel, said the centre was supporting the new awakening of African women through the project.
