Food security: Coalition wants AU declaration domesticated in states

Coalition of Non-State Actors on agricultural food systems have called for the domestication of the African Union Kampala declaration across 36 states of the Federation and the FCT to improve food and nutrition security in the country.

The Non-State Actors, comprising civil society organisations, farmer associations, academia, and research institutions, development partners, media, and the private sector, made the call yesterday in Abuja after a two-day workshop on the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) Kampala Declaration on ‘Strengthening Food Systems and Enhancing Food Security and Nutrition (2026-2035)..

The programme was supported by the German Development Corporation Sustainable Agricultural Systems and Policies (GIZ AgSys) and ActionAid Nigeria.

The Chairperson of the Coalition of NGOs in Agriculture and Sustainable Development, Rosemary Effiong, recalled the commitments made by the Nigerian government during the African Union Heads of States Summit on the CAADP Kampala Declaration in January 2025 as well as the unveiling of the 10-year Strategic Action Plan (2026-2035) to transform agricultural sector through a Presidential Directive to implement the six strategic objectives of the CAADP Kampala Declaration. ­­
