Farmers in the Northeast region have been trained on climate-smart farming techniques to mitigate risks and boost yields in their farming occupation.
During the training organised by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) Foundation, a social arm of the company, for Gombe cluster, comprising farmers from Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states, the farmers expressed willingness to adopt the techniques.
According to them, adopting new soil management and climate conscious techniques would enhance food production and food security in the region, and by extension reduce poverty.
One of the participants, Habila Bitrus, hailed the NNPC Foundation for the initiative, noting that it would increase the yields of the farmers as many were hitherto facing losses due to climate change in their farming activities. He said the training has equipped them with new knowledge and ideas on new techniques, and marketing strategies.
“Over 100 farmers shared plans to apply new soil management and climate-smart techniques to boost yields and livelihoods.” In his speech, the Managing Director of the foundation, Mrs Emmanuella Arukwe, represented by the Executive Director Programme Development of the foundation, Dr Bala David, explained that the initiative was aimed at boosting food security, empowering rural communities, and promoting sustainable agriculture.
According to her, no fewer than 15,000 smallholder farmers from across North-Central, North-West, and North-East zones benefited from the programme that ran from September 8 to October 12, 2025.
He noted that the farmers were equipped with modern agricultural techniques, post-harvest management skills, and market access strategies during the training.
Also speaking, the Project Manager of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs Goodnews Willie, described the programme as a living legacy of empowerment, resilience, and sustainable growth.
