Nigeria has solidified its leadership in the global energy sector with the appointment of Mr. Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors for 2025. This announcement came during the 189th meeting of the OPEC Conference, reaffirming the nation’s influence within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Prior to his elevation to the Chairman of the OPEC Board of Governors, Mr. Adeyemi-Bero was confirmed as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for 2025, a role that underscores Nigeria’s commitment to shaping global energy policies and promoting collaboration among member nations.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, celebrated the appointment of Adeyemi-Bero to the OPEC Board of Governors, highlighting it as a testament to Nigeria’s active contribution to the global oil industry.

“This appointment provides Nigeria with a vital platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers, and the global economy,” Lokpobiri stated.

He also praised Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his exemplary service and instrumental role in ensuring Nigeria’s influential presence in global energy discussions.

In addition to Mr. Adeyemi-Bero’s appointment, OPEC named Adeeb Al-Aama, the OPEC Governor for Saudi Arabia, as the Alternate Chairman of the Board of Governors for 2025.

The OPEC Conference, which convened representatives from member nations, addressed key issues including reports from the Secretary-General and the Economic Commission Board (ECB). Delegates also deliberated on internal matters critical to the organization’s objectives.

In a significant move, the Conference extended the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary-General for another three years, starting 1 August 2025. Member nations commended his exceptional leadership and the Secretariat’s commitment to advancing OPEC’s mission.
