Cooking gas price drops by 22.3% in one month

Nigerian households received some respite in August as cooking gas prices fell sharply, the latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch released on Thursday showed that the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder dropped by 22.32 per cent month-on-month, from N8,243.79 in July 2025 to N6,404.02 in August 2025. On a year-on-year basis, however, the price fell marginally, by 0.4 per cent, compared with N6,430.02 in August 2024.

A breakdown of the data revealed wide disparities across states. Katsina posted the highest average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder at N6,945.21, followed by Taraba at N6,893.12 and Rivers at N6,886.49.

Conversely, Delta recorded the lowest price at N5,657.50, while Bauchi (N5,721.75) and Borno (N6,070.56) also ranked among the cheapest. By region, the North-West recorded the highest average retail price for 5kg cylinders at N6,473.63, followed closely by the North-East at N6,465.63, while the South-South posted the lowest average at N6,331.29.

The downward trend also extended to larger cylinders. The average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder decreased by 21.42 per cent month-on-month, from N20,609.48 in July 2025 to N16,195.07 in August 2025. Unlike the 5kg category, however, the price rose 4.13 per cent year-on-year, up from N15,552.56 in August 2024.

“On state profile analysis, Yobe recorded the highest average retail price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cooking gas at N16,887.42, followed by Adamawa at N16,872.40 and Ebonyi at N16,859.17.

Conversely, the lowest average price was recorded in Benue at N15,102.50, followed by Borno (N15,176.39) and Imo (N15,177.58),” the report stated.

At the zonal level, the North-West again posted the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder at N16,358.15, followed by the South-East at N16,344.61, while the South-West recorded the lowest at N15,865.17.
