COREN, CORBON, COMEG sign MoU on joint regulation in built environment

Three regulatory agencies in Nigeria’s built environment sector have entered into a formal agreement aimed at coordinating oversight functions and improving professional regulation.

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), and the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, June 5, 2025, in Abuja.

The agreement was signed by Engr. Prof. Sadiq Z. Abubakar, Chairman of COREN; Engr. Bldr. Samson Ameh Opaluwah, Chairman of CORBON; and Engr. Bldr. Prof. Zacheus O. Opafunso, Registrar and CEO of COMEG.

The MoU outlines areas of collaboration among the three regulatory bodies, with a focus on shared oversight responsibilities, information exchange, and harmonization of standards across engineering, building, and geoscience professions in Nigeria.

In his remarks, COREN Chairman, Engr. Prof. Abubakar said the agreement aims to improve regulatory coordination in the sector. “This MoU is more than a ceremonial gesture – it is a bold, proactive commitment to safeguarding public interest by strengthening professional accountability and closing regulatory gaps in the industry,” he stated.

The agreement provides for joint enforcement mechanisms, capacity building, and alignment of regulatory practices to ensure that industry professionals meet established standards. Officials from the three bodies said the collaboration is expected to reduce overlap in mandates and improve compliance among practitioners.

Also present at the signing were Engr. Prof. Okorie Austin Uche, Registrar of COREN; Bldr. Adetunji Adeniranmni, Registrar of CORBON; and Engr. Aisha Kawu Gombe, Managing Director of Tectonics Engineering Group.

The MoU, facilitated under the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, was made public in a statement signed by Ojonugwa Haruna, Head of Corporate Advancement and Public Relations, on behalf of the Registrar.
