Group advocates safe, sustainable mobility
A non-governmental organisation, GreenLight Initiative (GLI) has urged the Nigerian government to prioritise green and sustainable mobility solutions in the transportation system, which according to the group, is a game changer for climate preservation.
Besides, the group called on the government to prioritise and invest in initiatives that promote sustainable transportation and adopt policies that encourage the use of electric vehicles, public transportation and cycling, thereby contributing to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions.
The group stated this at the just-concluded Conference of the Parties (COP) 28 hosted by the government of the United Arab Emirates in Dubai.According to GLI, transportation accounts for around one-fifth of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (24 per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions) constituting a pressing challenge in the fight against climate change.
The group stated that the road transport sector is responsible for about 15 per cent of the total CO2 emissions from transportation worldwide. This alarming figure underscores the urgency for transformative measures to address emissions from vehicles and enhance sustainable transportation systems, it stated.
“GLI’s participation at COP28 reflects its commitment to advocating for environmentally friendly transportation policies and practices. The organisation actively engaged with stakeholders, policymakers and experts to emphasize the importance of prioritising healthier, greener and sustainable mobility solutions,” it stated.
