CAN flays Taraba killings, urges govt to intervene

Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the recent attacks and killing of innocent citizens in Ussa Local Council of the state.

Suspected militia herdsmen reportedly killed over 10 persons in Kwesati village in Ussa, on Monday.

In a statement, yesterday, in Jalingo, Chairman of the association, Dr. Isaiah Jirapye, expressed sadness that the attack, which reportedly claimed 10 lives, came immediately after the general elections.

Wondering why the attackers carried out such “ungodly” act, while Nigerians were looking forward to a new administration and new ideas for development, CAN urged government to roll out its security apparatus against the perpetrators.

It added: “Such unprovoked attacks are unwarranted, considering that peace is never an option at this critical time that people are preparing for farming activities.”

CAN also drew the attention of President Muhammadu Buhari to the killings, stressing that “the best legacy the President will leave for the country is to end all forms of killings that characterised his eight years administration.”

While calling on the Federal Government to empower security agencies to end “all these dastardly acts,” he stressed the need for the state governments to look inward and find lasting solutions to such attacks on its citizens.”
