CMD seeks enabling environment for hospitals to thrive

Chief Medical Director (CMD), Ahamadiya Muslim Hospital, Ojokoro, Lagos, Dr. Samiullah Tahir, has reiterated the need for government to create enabling environment for hospitals to thrive in the country.


The CMD stated that high cost of drugs is still a major challenge of running hospitals in Nigeria, adding that there is need for government to upwardly review remunerations for medical doctors and other health workers.

The CMD, during a press conference and media tour organised by the hospital, in Lagos, last week, said the hospital has been in partnership with Lagos State government for over five years, offering medical treatment for Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immuno-deficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) for the people of Ojokoro community and Lagosians at large.

He said the hospital started in India in 1889 and spread to other parts of the world to render healthcare services to mankind, irrespective of religion and tribe, adding that the hospital has three branches in South West, Nigeria, which include: Apapa, Ojokoro, and Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.

The hospital also runs special clinic in Kano and Imo States among others. He added that the hospital branch in Imo state is currently been shutdown because of insecurity in the area. He said the hospital has branch in Jos, Plateau State, but it was attacked by insurgents and it was also shut down.

He said Ahamadiya Hospital has been recognised over the years for excellence by United Nations for Children Education Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organisation (WHO).

He said the work the hospital is doing is part of their missionary work, through Islam, which is serving humanity.

He said in every community where the hospital is located, they always go for medical outreach to educate members of the community about their health and well-being.

In his remark, one of the doctors in the hospital Dr. Akinwale Owotoro, said the hospital offers excellent physiotherapy services for clients with stroke, arthritis, sports/spinal cord injuries, back pain and other forms of mobility challenges. “Our goal is to put a smile on our clients face”.
