Centre for Management Development (CMD) has harped on mentorship and collaboration as measures to help women reach the peak of their career.
This was disclosed at the maiden CMD seminar in commemoration of International Women’s Day, themed ‘Break the Bias’ in Lagos.
Deputy Director, Women and Youth Division, CMD, Stella Edem, said the seminar was to encourage further action on issues of gender bias as well as empower women and girls in Nigeria.
She added that the seminar, which was relevant as there are a lot of biases to break for women especially in career, mindset, gender equality and others.
On how women perceived themselves, she said: “It is based on individuality but we must continue to improve the women and bring in the girls, who are the future women to train and mentor them.”
Director General, CMD, Bitrus Chinoko, stressed the need to encourage gender sensitisation for a sustainable future through sustained education to break the bias in communities, workplaces and schools.
Chinoko, who received the United Nations Association of Nigeria (UNAN), ‘He-For-She Award for his role in lifting women in CMD and the larger society, noted that the millennium witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in the thoughts about women’s development and growth.
“With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights and increased critical mass of women’s visibility, as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women are truly empowered to impact,” he said.
Director, Entrepreneurship and Business Development Department, CMD, Olanike Adeyemo noted the need to discuss issues around empowerment and growth of women, ensuring that the future of the girl child is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
She noted that there has been improvement in women taking up bigger positions in career as against when they used to be timid and non confident in themselves.
She called on women to keep on trying and never give up.
